Veterans dementia benefits in Texas
A starting-point overview for families caring for a Texas veteran. Eligibility and amounts must always be verified with the VA.
Start with VA healthcare
If the veteran isn't already enrolled in VA healthcare, that's usually step one. Enrollment opens doors to many programs including primary care, mental health, geriatric care, and caregiver support.
VA Caregiver Support Program
The VA Caregiver Support Program (CSP) offers training, peer support, and — for eligible families — financial stipends and respite. There are two parts: the Program of General Caregiver Support Services (open to many caregivers) and the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (more selective). The VA Caregiver Support Line is the right starting point.
Aid & Attendance / Housebound
These are increased monthly pension benefits for eligible wartime veterans (or their surviving spouses) who need help with daily activities or are housebound. Eligibility involves service history, income, assets, and medical need. Do not pay anyone to "help you get approved" — free accredited help is available.
Texas Veterans Commission
The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) provides free, accredited claims assistance and benefits counseling. They can help with VA claims, appeals, and connecting to state-specific programs.
Questions to ask a VA social worker
- Is the veteran enrolled in VA healthcare? What priority group?
- Is the veteran connected to a geriatric or memory care clinic at the VA?
- Are they eligible for Caregiver Support? Which program?
- Is Aid & Attendance worth exploring based on income and care needs?
- Are there respite, adult day, or home health benefits available?
- Who is the right accredited person to file a claim — VA, TVC, or a VSO?
